9:38AM - Best small AM2 cooler?

I have an HTPC setup with an AM2 socket dual core 6400+ chip on it. Currently, I have a stock cooler and it's getting much hotter than I'd like.

I'm looking for a replacement CPU fan/heatsink that is much better at cooling while being very small, as the HTPC case only has about 4" of clearance from board to top and is cramped inside. Any ideas?

9:49PM - Trackpoint laptop mod

Hello, brand new newbie here.

I've never modded anything before but there's one mod I'm itching to make. I've got a new laptop (HP dv2000) and to my annoyance, laptops generally don't come with trackpoint devices anymore. Anyone know how I would go about adding one to my new laptop? Is there a kit I would buy (I imagine there isn't), or would I have to dismantle an older machine for parts? I don't even know if it's possible - I googled around a bit but couldn't find anything about it.

I'd appreciate any input you have. :) Thanks!

I see plenty of adapters on NewEgg that connect a SATA drive to an old 4-pin power supply but I need the opposite, an IDE 4-pin drive that connects to SATA power.

Has anyone here seen such a device?

sabatoa

I have a noob question for.

Which chip would you choose?

Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (2.2 GHz, 2.0 Ghz Bus, 2x512Mhz cache)

or

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 2MB cache, non-HT)

Also, if I got the Core 2 Duo I'd like to overclock it. Can you send me to a good site to teach me or could you tell me how to?

7:16PM - Advice/opinions.

I'm looking at a couple of CPU cooler choices for a new rig I'm putting together; the Zalman CNPS9700 LED , and the Coolermaster Aquagate ALC-U01.
The price is almost identical and there's a certain temptation in a small foray into watercooling, so I'm very tempted by the ALC-U01 as it looks like a pretty reasonable setup and should also be less scary than my home made ideas(very short on cash, and my wife REALLY doesn't like the idea:>).
On the other hand the reviews seem to suggest that it's cooling capabilities aren't that impressive (but it's unclear if that's "...for a watercooler" or in general) whereas they all seem pretty impressed with the Zalman air cooler.

The question is which is likely to be more effective at cooling an overclocked Core2Duo processor?
I'm going to be working in a Thermaltake Armor case so there should be plenty of room for either solution; noise is a concern, but not a major one cf cooling capability (I used to have a 120mm Delta running at full speed in my old case-I'd like to keep it quiter than that:>).
How about a different fan on the Aquagate, likely to be worth it or not?

Here's an interesting technical question for those of you who are into this stuff.

System Specs:
FIC Mainboard K8-800T
Running newest bios (from 10/12/2004)

I have two RAID controllers in my system.

One is the onboard RAID0 controlling two RAPTOR74GB SATA drives. This is my boot set and it boots just fine on it's own.
The second is a SIL3114 add-on card supporting RAID5, which I have set up on four 250GB SATA drives for data storage.

When the SIL3114 card was set to RAID0 , the machine would load the SIL card first, account for all the drives in RAID0, then load the onboard RAID chip and account for all of the drives, boot from that system and all was well.

Today, I decided to change the SIL's setup from RAID0 to RAID5, as I wanted redundancy.

The card now reads RAID5 in the setup from the SIL card but doesn't load the board-based RAID0. Upon rebooting, it loads the SIL RAID, then goes to boot from it and fails. There is one jumper one the SIL card (I was hoping this would be to disable boot-from-RAID) that I can't find identification for and when jumped, doesn't look like it makes a bit of difference. It never does load the onboard RAID now.

Intererestly enough, if I remove the SIL Raid drives from the SIL Bios and leave them as non-RAID stand alone drives, it auto-boots the board-RAID just fine. On the same token, if I take the Sil-RAID card out of the machine, it also boots the Board-RAID just fine. Strangely, if I make the Sil drives RAID0 (the way they worked before), the machine WILL NOT load the onboard controller anymore.

So, here's my question...

How do I get my system to boot from the board raid first? Or, alternatively, how do I tell the Sil RAID card not to allow booting and to simply be a SATA RAID5 data drive?

Any help you guys might have would be useful.

Simple (but complex) Nvidia ntune problem:

I can save a profile, but if I try and load the profile I just saved (even if it a profile with zero changes), ntune just says "there has been a problem loading profile [name] from [path]"

All I want to do is turn down the GPU fan speed by default since it is noisy. It works manually, but is useless if I cannot re-load the associated (or any) profile.

I don't know if it is associated, but whenever I try to get to the motherboard tune part of nTune, nTune crashes. If i stick to GPU tweaks, it is stable. I have never had much joy with ntune with the following, but the new interface is totally rubbish. Nvidia could not have come up with a worse interface.

AMD CPU 3200+
512MB RAM
ECS KN1 Extreme SLI motherboard
Geforce 6800 XT GPU

nforce 4 driver: 6.86 amd series
video driver: 91.31
audio driver: 4.62a
ntune: 5.08.06

Finally, I installed amd cool n quiet drivers yesterday. I have tried uninstalling them but does not affect ntune. To be honest, I have not noticed any different with cool and quiet installed (is turned on in bios too!).

Any ideas why I can't load a ntune profile?

11:02AM - external power

I am in the process of gathering parts/peices
for a computer mod - that will be built soon.

I want it to have an EXTERNAL power supply instead of internal if anyone can point me in the right direction for this, let me know.
I have seen people do mods with external - using a laptop powersupply type thing.

9:21PM - PCI Express problem

Hi - I joined this group today - maybe one of you can help?

I built my current PC last November, which was the first time I have tried doing this:

mobo: ECS KN1 Extreme SLI with two PCI Express x16 slots.
gfx: GeForce 6800XT PCI Express in slot 1 (nothing in slot 2)
proc: AMD Athlon64 3200
RAM: 2x 500MB
HD: 2x 200GB

Thereforce I should get full x16 bandwidth from the PCI Express bus?

The nvidia control panel says that:
Bus: PCI Express x8

see pic:

I have checked mobo manual and bios - can see no reason for it to report x8 unless it for some reason thinks that I have two cards installed, which I do not. I have forceware 81.98 for gfx and nforce x16 6.85 for mobo. I have no other PCI cards installed at all.

Everything works and I get good frames per second playing Quake4, but it is bugging me that I might be getting reduced performance due to bandwidth issues via PCI Express bus. It has always said x8 from the start.

Any ideas - thanks,
Simon

2:00PM - Nice server

I ordered a server for work and I realised it has specs most would dream of. It's just silly...

Quad Xeon 3.66GHz w/ 8mb cache per CPU
8gb RAM
2x 73gb 15,000 rpm drives for OS
2x 36gb 15,000 rpm drives for pagefile
28x 146gb 15,000 rpm drives RAID10 for SQL

the server takes 10U rack space, needs about 10 amps of power to run (2x 1100 watt psu)

3 years of bumper to bumper warrantee

a bargain at $48,000

Current mood: amused

6:59AM

Hello,

Just joined the community. I got one problem, and one question.

Problem
I play World of Warcraft (that is not the problem). While playing, I use Ventrillo to speak with people in my guild. When using this program, there is a 50/50 chance that I will sound like:
Robocop
I am working on Jet planes
In a bathtub
skydiving
or all of the above

I am able to sound normal some of the time, which leads me to believe that it is not a hardware problem. Any thoughts? (Sound Blaster Audigy 2, broadband connection shared with 2 other computers)

Question
I am looking to upgrade my video card. I currently have an nVidia GeForce TI4600. I am looking to spend up to $300 on this purchase. Any thoughts on the matter?

Thanks,
Chesch

Hey, guess I'm the new kid. Just joined last night, never modded a damn thng before but everyone's gotta start somewhere.

Anyway, here's a question. Probably a bit off-topic, but hopefully still acceptable. I picked up an old Nintendo at our local thrift store last week and I want to try a case mod but lack any kind of skill with the disassembly/reassembly of such things. I have a fairly adequate dremel set, and can scrounge up any random screwdrivers, razor knives, whatever as needed.

Basically, does anyone know a general walk-through guide or sites that might help me out? I only have the one console, and nothing really similar to practice on so I'd really like to get it right on the first try.

Gracias!

2:18PM - BEYOND pissed off

Hey all. Was hoping somebody here could help me with a rather large problem...

Scenario: Bought my computer recently from one of those pawn shops. Needed something and was too broke to do anything else at the moment, computer and car both went at the same time. Well, it worked for about 5 or 6 days and now when I turn it on, at the main page where I set up a password, it doesn't show my name and wont let me into windows. When I hit control-alt-delete, it takes me to a screen with the name of the original owner and THEIR password. I was told this computer was cleaned and I wouldn't have any problems and I'm already past the 7 day return policy so I'm screwed. I can't figure it out, I just recently learned what control-alt-delete did. I'm near tears on this matter, I can't afford a computer guy to fix it for at least 2 months until my finances straighten out after the new car. If I don't have a computer, I don't work. Is there somebody out there in the computer world who can help? How can I bypass this problem?

Sincerely,
Going crazy and freaking out

7:10PM - Internet Help?

Okay, I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 *not even sure how ancient it is* but I would like to use wireless internet with it, you know, when you go to a coffee house and they have the hook up? But I'm STUMPED how to do it. I have an Ethernet Adapter ... Etherx ic pc card but still that doesn't help me at all... My mom says it's very unlikely with the age of my computer that I can make it compatible with an wireless system but I was hoping somebody could help, please?

Thanks

4:40PM - question

I am looking for a way to make a ribbon/or/cable to go from a pi slot, for a mod that is going to resemble a sampler/sequencer rack (like this: korg triton rack)

so I have little space to put a motherboard, hd, & studio soundcard
and any other stuff so what would everyones ideas be.

///

my idea was to run a cable/wire/ribbon from the pci slot (for soundcard to the front of the rack, but I am not sure.

2:04PM - Help me!

Hello,

I'm new to this forum, and I have a quick question for those who can help! First of all, this is my hardware:

(1) HP NetRAID 1SI Level 1 Channel Controller
(2) IBM 18.2GB 80MB/sec Ultra2 SCSI 80pin Hard Drives

(1) DFI LANParty UT NF3 250GB S754 Motherboard
(1) AMD Athlon 64 2800+ Newcastle S754
(1) ATI FireGL X1-128 AGP 8x Video Card
(1) Samsung 512MB PC3200 DDR400 184PIN
...

Now, I have absolutely no idea how to set up my RAID/SCSI gear, and I'm working with SuSE Linux Professional 9.3 . I bought the SCSI drives and RAID controller from eBay, so I don't have manuals/cables. Can someone please tell me exactly which cables I need to pick up, and how to get everything working in Linux? Also, can I run a Seagate 160GB 7200RPM IDE hard drive alongside the RAID controller?

Please respond quickly, and thanks a lot for your help!!

Rob
